Maori folklore – Karu means eye. Whatu has double meaning as an eye or a ritual stone. The stone is swallowed by the pupil during his initiation as tohunga (Master). The stone contains powers that will choose the pupil’s tohunga, the blue sky and white powder stone of the Tanker is endowed with the powers to choose it’s rider as a “tohunga whakiro” or “Master Carver”.

The luxurious gold trimmed, hand carved teak inlay is set against a mother-of-pearl topsheet then finished with a sea blue paua-shell eye. The Maori symbol for vigilance, the paua protects riders, thwarting imminent danger in their quest for backcountry freedom.
